Life quotes

Life is a beautiful magnificent thing, even to a jellyfish. Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot. What do you want meaning for? Life is desire, not meaning. Life can be wonderful if you're not afraid of it. All it takes is courage, imagination ... and a little dough We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born. Today I know "THAT IS LIFE".
The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for. Who are you to judge the life I live?
I know I'm not perfect -
and I don't live to be -
but before you start pointing fingers...
make sure you hands are clean!
Love the life you live.
Live the life you love.
Don't gain the world and lose your soul, wisdom is better than silver or gold. The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.
Better to die fighting for freedom then be a prisoner all the days of your life. Life is one big road with lots of signs. So when you riding through the ruts, don't complicate your mind. Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy. Don't bury your thoughts, put your vision to reality. Wake Up and Live! The winds that sometimes take something we love, are the same that bring us something we learn to love. Therefore we should not cry about something that was taken from us, but, yes, love what we have been given. Because what is really ours is never gone forever. Live for yourself and you will live in vain;
Live for others, and you will live again.
Open your eyes, look within. Are you satisfied with the life you're living? Though the road's been rocky it sure feels good to me. Your worst enemy could be your best friend and your best friend - your worst enemy. To love is to risk, not being loved in return.
To hope is to risk pain.
To try is to risk failure.
But risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in my life is to risk nothing.
You just can't live that negative way.
You know what I mean. Make way for the positive day. Cause it's a new day...
Beginnings are usually scary, and endings are usually sad, but its everything in between that makes it all worth living. Life and Jah are one in the same.
Jah is the gift of existence.
I am in some way eternal, I will never be duplicated. The singularity of every man and woman is Jah's gift.
What we struggle to make of it is our sole gift to Jah. The process of what that struggle becomes, in time, the Truth.
When the race gets hard to run, it means you just can't take the peace. Until the end of the world, all whys will be answered, but now,you can only ask! Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. One lifetime is not enough to live.
I have seen many storms in my life. Most storms have caught me by surprise, so I had to learn very quickly to look further and understand that I am not capable of controlling the weather, to exercise the art of patience and to respect the fury of nature. Life was always a matter of waiting for the right moment to act. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen. You can become blind by seeing each day as a similar one. Each day is a different one, each day brings a miracle of its own. It's just a matter of paying attention to this miracle. We have lost contact with reality, the simplicity of life.
Everything that happens once can never happen again. But everything that happens twice will surely happen a third time. There is an afterlife. I am convinced of this. It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting. The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times. When someone leaves, it's because someone else is about to arrive. We can never judge the lives of others, because each person knows only their own pain and renunciation. It's one thing to feel that you are on the right path, but it's another to think that yours is the only path. When I had nothing to lose, I had everything. When I stopped being who I am, I found myself. Nothing in the world is ever completely wrong. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. The two hardest tests on the spiritual road are the patience to wait for the right moment and the courage not to be disappointed with what we encounter. When we meet someone and fall in love, we have a sense that the whole universe is on our side. And yet if something goes wrong, there is nothing left! How is it possible for the beauty that was there only minutes before to vanish so quickly? Life moves very fast. It rushes from heaven to hell in a matter of seconds. None of us knows what might happen even the next minute, yet still we go forward. Because we trust. Because we have Faith. I can choose either to be a victim of the world or an adventurer in search of treasure. It's all a question of how I view my life. Anyone who has lost something they thought was theirs forever finally comes to realise that nothing really belongs to them. Accept what life offers you and try to drink from every cup. All wines should be tasted; some should only be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle. I don’t live in either my past or my future. I’m interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man. Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we’re living now. Life always waits for some crisis to occur before revealing itself at its most brilliant. No one loses anyone, because no one owns anyone. That is the true experience of freedom: having the most important thing in the world without owning it. Really important meetings are planned by the souls long before the bodies see each other.
Generally speaking, these meetings occur when we reach a limit, when we need to die and be reborn emotionally. These meetings are waiting for us, but more often than not, we avoid them happening.
If we are desperate, though, if we have nothing to lose, or if we are full of enthusiasm for life, then the unknown reveals itself, and our universe changes direction.
We are afraid of losing what we have, whether it's our life or our possessions and property. But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same hand. At every moment of our lives, we all have one foot in a fairy tale and the other in the abyss. Sometimes, we are so attached to our way of life that we turn down wonderful opportunities simply because don't know what to do with it. Making a decision was only the beginning of things. When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he had never dreamed of when he first made the decision. Life can seem short or life can seem long, depending on how you live it. Life has many ways of testing a person's will, either by having nothing happen at all or by having everything happen all at once. Anxiety was born in the very same moment as mankind. And since we will never be able to master it, we will have to learn to live with it—just as we have learned to live with storms. Sometimes life is very mean: a person can spend days, weeks, months and years without feeling new. Then, when a door opens - a positive avalanche pours in. One moment, you have nothing, the next, you have more than you can cope with. Considering the way the world is, one happy day is almost a miracle. We always have a tendency to see those things that do not exist and to be blind to the great lessons that are right there before our eyes. If you have a past with which you feel dissatisfied, then forget it, now. Imagine a new story for your life and believe in it. Focus only on the moments when you achieved what you desired, and that strength will help you to get what you want. I think that when we look for love courageously, it reveals itself, and we wind up attracting even more love. If one person really wants us, everyone does.
But if we're alone, we become even more alone. Life is strange.
Everyday God gives us a moment in which it is possible to change everything that makes us unhappy.
Live quietly in the moment and see the beauty of all before you. The future will take care of itself. Be as simple as you can be; you will be astonished to see how uncomplicated and happy your life can become. You must not let your life run in the ordinary way; do something that nobody else has done, something that will dazzle the world. Show that God's creative principle works in you. If you permit your thoughts to dwell on evil you yourself will become ugly. Look only for the good in everything so you absorb the quality of beauty. Having lots of money while not having inner peace is like dying of thirst while bathing in the ocean.
The entire universe is God's cosmic motion picture, and that individuals are merely actors in the divine play who change roles through reincarnation; mankind's deep suffering is rooted in identifying too closely with one's current role, rather than with the movie's director, or God. The reflection, the verisimilitude, of life that shines in the fleshly cells from the soul source is the only cause of man's attachment to his body; obviously he would not pay solicitous homage to a clod of clay.
A human being falsely identifies himself with his physical form because the life currents from the soul are breath-conveyed into the flesh with such intense power that man mistakes the effect for a cause, and idolatrously imagines the body to have life of its own.
Heavenly Father, my body cells are made of light, my fleshly cells are made of Thee. They are Spirit, for Thou art Spirit; they are immortal, for Thou art Life. Every day try to help uplift physically, mentally, or spiritually suffering people, as you would help yourself or your family.
If, instead of living in the misery-making selfish way, you live according to the laws of God, then, no matter what small part you may be playing on the stage of life, you will know that you have been playing your part correctly, as directed by the Stage Manager of all our destinies. Your part, however small, is just as important as the biggest parts in contributing to the success of the Drama of Souls on the Stage of Life.
Make a little money and be satisfied with it by living a simple life and expressing your ideals, rather than make lots of money and have worries without end.
Newton's Law of Motion is a law of maya: "To every action there is always an equal and contrary reaction; the mutual actions of any two bodies are always equal and oppositely directed." Action and reaction are thus exactly equal. "To have a single force is impossible. There must be, and always is, a pair of forces equal and opposite."
The one you love and the one who loves you are never, ever the same person. All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring. I don't want to die without any scars. This is your life and its ending one moment at a time You realize that our mistrust of the future makes it hard to give up the past.
No matter how careful you are, there's going to be the sense you missed something, the collapsed feeling under your skin that you didn't experience it all. There's that fallen heart feeling that you rushed right through the moments where you should've been paying attention.
Well, get used to that feeling. That's how your whole life will feel some day.
This is all practice.
A girl calls and asks, "Does it hurt very much to die?"
"Well, sweetheart," I tell her, "yes, but it hurts a lot more to keep living.
At the time, my life just seemed too complete, and maybe we have to break everything to make something better out of ourselves. Most times, it's just a lot easier not to let the world know what's wrong. Warning: If you are reading this then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don't you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can't think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all that claim it? Do you read everything you're supposed to read? Do you think every thing you're supposed to think? Buy what you're told to want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you're alive. If you don't claim your humanity you will become a statistic. You have been warned. I want out of the labels. I don't want my whole life crammed into a single word. A story. I want to find something else, unknowable, some place to be that's not on the map. A real adventure.'
A spinx. A mystery. A blank. Unknown. Undefined.
That's why I write, because life never works except in retrospect. You can't control life, at least you can control your version. Fuck me. I'm so tired of being me. Me beautiful. Me ugly. Blonde. Brunette. A million fucking fashion makeovers that only leave me trapped being me.
Who I was before the accident is just a story now. Everything before now, before now, before now, is just a story I carry around. I guess that would apply to anybody in the world. What I need is a new story about who I am.
What I need to do is fuck up so bad I can't save myself.
Your birth is a mistake you'll spend your whole life trying to correct. Nothing drives people crazier than seeing someone have a good fucking life. It can only take a moment to waste the rest of your life. You know how both life and porno movies end. The only difference is life starts with the orgasm. After you find out all the things that can go wrong, your life becomes less about living and more about waiting. What makes earth feel like hell is our expectation that it should feel like heaven. Everything is funnier in retrospect, funnier and prettier and cooler. You can laugh at anything from far enough away. No matter how much you love someone, you still want to have you own way. Anymore, no one's mind is their own. The best way to waste your life, is by taking notes. The easiest way to avoid living is to just watch. Look for the details. Report. Don't participate. The voice says, maybe you don't go to hell for the things you do. Maybe you go to hell for the things you don't do. The things you don't finish. That’s the American Dream: to make your life into something you can sell. Pretty much always. We need to tell the story of our life to someone. My point is, that if I'm honest, my life is all about me. Nothing was solved when the fight was over, but nothing mattered. I haven't had a TV in 10 years, and I really don't miss it. 'Cause it's always so much more fun to be with people than it ever was to be with a television. Someday, I'd like to live a life based on doing good stuff instead of just not doing bad stuff After long enough, everyone in the world will be you enemy.
Change your life today. Don't gamble on the future, act now, without delay. I wish that every human life might be pure transparent freedom. One's life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love, friendship, indignation and compassion. Life is occupied in both perpetuating itself and in surpassing itself; if all it does is maintain itself, then living is only not dying. When an individual is kept in a situation of inferiority, the fact is that he does become inferior.
If you live long enough, you'll see that every victory turns into a defeat. It is not in giving life but in risking life that man is raised above the animal; that is why superiority has been accorded in humanity not to the sex that brings forth but to that which kills. It is old age, rather than death, that is to be contrasted with life. Old age is life's parody, whereas death transforms life into a destiny: in a way it preserves it by giving it the absolute dimension. Death does away with time. Why one man rather than another? It was odd. You find yourself involved with a fellow for life just because he was the one that you met when you were nineteen. I am incapable of conceiving infinity, and yet I do not accept finity. I want this adventure that is the context of my life to go on without end. The body is not a thing, it is a situation: it is our grasp on the world and our sketch of our project. It is in the knowledge of the genuine conditions of our lives that we must draw our strength to live and our reasons for living. My life was hurrying, racing tragically toward its end. And yet at the same time it was dripping so slowly, so very slowly now, hour by hour, minute by minute. One always has to wait until the sugar melts, the memory dies, the wound scars over, the sun sets, the unhappiness lifts and fades away. In a way, literature is true than life,' he said to himself. 'On paper, you say exactly and completely what you feel. How easy it is to break things off on paper!
You hate, you shout, you kill, you commit suicide; you carry things to the very end. And that's why it's false.
But it's damned satisfying. In life, you're constantly denying yourself, and others are always contradicting you.
On paper, I make time stand still and I impose my convictions on the whole world; they become the only reality.
Some things I loved have vanished. A great many others have been given to me. Today, however, we are having a hard time living because we are so bent on outwitting death. - There you are. The sight of the changing world is miraculous and heartbreaking, both at the same time.
- But so it is for me too. The heartbreaking side of growing old is not in the things around one but in oneself.
But I must admit I didn't like that idea; do the same thing as everyone else. Eating to live, living to eat - that had been the nightmare of my adolescence.
If it meant going back to that, if would be just as well to turn on the gas at once. But I suppose everyone thinks of things like that: let´s turn on the gas at once. And you don't turn it on.
The misfortune is that although everyone must come to (death), each experiences the adventure in solitude. We never left Maman during those last days... and yet we were profoundly separated from her. The characteristic feature of all ethics is to consider human life as a game that can be won or lost and to teach man the means of winning. I went to get a detective story.
You have to kill time.
But time will kill me too - and there's the true, preestablished balance.
I should like this sky, this quiet water, to think themselves within me, that it might be I whom they express in flesh and bone, and I remain at a distance. But it is also by this distance that the sky and the water exist before me. For twenty years it seemed to me that I had been taking part in a game, and that one day, at the stroke of midnight, I would return to the land of shadows.
...In a little while, the hands would be pointing to midnight; they would point to midnight tomorrow and the next day, and I would still be here.
It's only terrible to have nothing to wait for. I am young, I am twenty years old; yet I know nothing of life but despair, death, fear, and fatuous superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow. I see how peoples are set against one another, and in silence, unknowingly, foolishly, obediently, innocently slay one another. Life did not intend to make us perfect. Whoever is perfect belongs in a museum. We were all at once terribly alone; and alone we must see it through. We are not youth any longer. We don't want to take the world by storm. We are fleeing. We fly from ourselves. From our life. We were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces.
Keep things at arm's length... If you let anything come too near you want to hold on to it. And there is nothing a man can hold on to. Life is a disease, brother, and death begins already at birth. Every breath, every heartbeat, is a moment of dying - a little shove toward the end. - Why does a man live?
- In order to think about it...
Modesty and conscientiousness receive their reward only in novels. In life they are exploited and then shoved aside. It was a melancholy secret that reality can arouse desires but never satisfy them. With blinded eyes I stared at the sky, this grey, endless sky of a crazy god, who had made life and death for his amusement. Never do anything complicated when something simple will serve as well. It's one of the most important secrets of living. Good or ill, life is life; you only realize that when you have to risk it. Come let me kiss you. Life was never so precious as today— when it meant so little. Nothing is the mirror in which you see the world. Our knowledge of life is limited to death. Everyone saves someone at least once. Just as he kills someone at least once. Even though he may not know it. But probably that's the way of the world - when we have finally learned something we're too old to apply it - and so it goes, wave after wave, generation after generation. No one learns anything at all from anyone else. Someone said to me once that a cigarette at the right moment is better than all the ideals in the world. I am thinking of those strange moments when unexpectedly a kind of second sight like a deceptive memory seems suddenly to give us glimpses of many earlier lives. It's no shame to be born stupid. Only to die stupid. Some day perhaps our time will be known as the age of irony. Not the witty irony of the eighteenth century, but the stupid or malignant irony of a crude age of technological progress and cultural regression. A miracle is never perfect when it happens, there are always little disappointments. But once it's gone for good and nothing can change it, memory could make it perfect and then it would never change.
If I can just call it to life now, won't it always stay the same?
Won't it stay with me as long as I live?
One is never too young. Only always too old. One is sad when one thinks about life — cynical when one sees what people make of it. If things went according to the death notices, ... the earth seems to have been populated by a horde of wingless angels without one’s having been aware of it. Pure love, which in reality is to be found so seldom, shines on all sides in death, and is the commonest thing of all.
It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default. It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be. Do not pity the dead. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love. We're all human, aren't we? Every human life is worth the same, and worth saving.
"I don't care!" Harry yelled at them, snatching up a lunascope and throwing it into the fireplace.
"I've had enough, I've seen enough, I want out, I want it to end, I don't care anymore!"
"You do care," said Dumbledore.
He had not flinched or made a single move to stop Harry demolishing his office. His expression was calm, almost detached.
"You care so much you feel as though you will bleed to death with the pain of it."
We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already. There is no good and evil, there is only power and those too weak to seek it. What would come, would come...and you would have to meet it, when it did. When you have seen as much of life as I have, you will not underestimate the power of obsessive love. "I know [Umbridge] by reputation and I'm sure she's not a Death Eater..."
"She's foul enough to be one..."
"Yes, but the world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters."
The consequences of our actions are always so complicated, so diverse, that predicting the future is a very difficult business indeed. You must accept the reality of other people. You think that reality is up for negotiation, that we think it's whatever you say it is. You must accept that we are as real as you are; you must accept that you are not God. You are the true master of Death, because the true master does not seek to run away from Death. He accepts that be must die, and understands that there are far, far worse things in the living world than dying. I was set free because my greatest fear had been realized, and I still had a daughter who I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life. When people are very damaged, they can often meet the world with a kind of defiance. There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other. I think you're working and learning until you die. It is perfectly possible to live a very moral life without a belief in God, and I think it's perfectly possible to live a life peppered with ill-doing and believe in God. Which came first, the phoenix or the flame? Time is making fools of us again. Some wounds run too deep for the healing. Always the innocent are the first victims, so it has been for ages past, so it is now.
I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back. It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness. The changes in our life must come from the impossibility to live otherwise than according to the demands of our conscience not from our mental resolution to try a new form of life. All happy families resemble one another, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. Without knowing what I am and why I am here, life is impossible.
True life is lived when tiny changes occur. Man lives consciously for himself, but is an unconscious instrument in the attainment of the historic, universal, aims of humanity. If there existed no external means for dimming their consciences, one-half of the men would at once shoot themselves, because to live contrary to one's reason is a most intolerable state, and all men of our time are in such a state. And all people live, Not by reason of any care they have for themselves, But by the love for them that is in other people. In the name of God, stop a moment, cease your work, look around you. Faith is the sense of life, that sense by virtue of which man does not destroy himself, but continues to live on. It is the force whereby we live. A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it done to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbor — such is my idea of happiness. All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow. Love is life. All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love. Everything is, everything exists, only because I love. Everything is united by it alone. Love is God, and to die means that I, a particle of love, shall return to the general and eternal source. The best stories don't come from "good vs. bad" but "good vs. good". Pierre was right when he said that one must believe in the possibility of happiness in order to be happy, and I now believe in it. Let the dead bury the dead, but while I'm alive, I must live and be happy. If we admit that human life can be ruled by reason, then all possibility of life is destroyed. There are no conditions to which a person cannot grow accustomed, especially if he sees that everyone around him lives in the same way. One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love. The most important knowledge is that which guides the way you lead your life.
Some people never go crazy, what truly horrible lives they must live. There will always be something to ruin our lives, it all depends on what or which finds us first. We are always ripe and ready to be taken. We're all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn't. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing. You have to die a few times before you can really live. Those who escape hell, however, never talk about it and nothing much bothers them after that.
You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet. In the fight between you and the world, back the world. You can hold yourself back from the sufferings of the world, that is something you are free to do and it accords with your nature, but perhaps this very holding back is the one suffering you could avoid. He who seeks does not find, but he who does not seek will be found. If I shall exist eternally, how shall I exist tomorrow?
Maybe that's what life is... a wink of the eye and winking stars. A pain stabbed my heart as it did every time I saw a girl I loved who was going the opposite direction in this too-big world. Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life. All of life is a foreign country. Live, travel, adventure, bless, and don't be sorry.
Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why. I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all the kinds of things you can't see from the center. I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different. The feeling about a soldier is, when all is said and done, he wasn't really going to do very much with his life anyway. The example usually is: he wasn't going to compose Beethoven's Fifth. One might be led to suspect that there were all sorts of things going on in the universe which he or she did not thoroughly understand.
It is a very mixed blessing to be brought back from the dead. Hello babies.
Welcome to Earth.
It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
It's round and wet and crowded.
On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here.
There's only one rule that I know of, babies - "God damn it, you've got to be kind."
And I asked myself about the present: how wide it was, how deep it was, how much was mine to keep. Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, "It might have been". Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand.
Take it moment by moment, and you will find that we are all, as I’ve said before, bugs in amber. I wanted all things
To seem to make some sense,
So we could all be happy, yes,
Instead of tense.
And I made up lies
So that they all fit nice,
And I made this sad world
A par-a-dise.
Do you realize that all great literature is all about what a bummer it is to be a human being?
Isn't it such a relief to have somebody say that?
No good at life, but very funny sometimes with the commentary. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to always tell the difference. No matter how corrupt, greedy, and heartless our government, our corporations, our media, and our religious & charitable institutions may become, the music will still be wonderful. I think you guys are going to have to come up with a lot of wonderful new lies, or people just aren't going to want to go on living. The worst thing that could possibly happen to anybody would be to not be used for anything by anybody. Thank you for using me, even though I didn't want to be used by anybody. I will say, too, that lovemaking, if sincere, is one of the best ideas Satan put in the apple she gave to the serpent to give to Eve. The best idea in that apple, though, is making jazz. I still believe that peace and plenty and happiness can be worked out some way. I am a fool. Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die.
Perhaps life is just that... a dream and a fear. This magnificent butterfly finds a little heap of dirt and sits still on it; but man will never on his heap of mud keep still. Woe to the man whose heart has not learned while young to hope, to love - and to put its trust in life. It is to be remarked that a good many people are born curiously unfitted for the fate waiting them on this earth. To have his path made clear for him is the aspiration of every human being in our beclouded and tempestuous existence.
There are men here and there to whom the whole of life is like an after-dinner hour with a cigar; easy, pleasant, empty, perhaps enlivened by some fable of strife to be forgotten - before the end is told - even if there happens to be any end to it A man that is born falls into a dream like a man who falls into the sea. If he tries to climb out into the air as inexperienced people endeavor to do, he drowns. Only in men's imagination does every truth find an effective and undeniable existence. Imagination, not invention, is the supreme master of art as of life. A man's real life is that accorded to him in the thoughts of other men by reason of respect or natural love Droll thing life is - that mysterious arrangement of merciless logic for a futile purpose. The most you can hope from it is some knowledge of yourself - that comes too late - a crop of inextinguishable regrets. The question is not how to get cured, but how to live. It’s extraordinary how we go through life with eyes half shut, with dull ears, with dormant thoughts. Perhaps it’s just as well; and it may be that it is this very dullness that makes life to the incalculable majority so supportable and so welcome.
